About Kesaria

Geography of Kesaria

With an average elevation of 65 meters above sea level, Kesaria has geographical coordinates of 26.334140°N and 84.854762°E. It is located 36 KM towards South from the district headquarters of Motihari and 110 KM towards South from the state capital of Patna. It is surrounded by Kalyanpur Block towards North, Baikunthpur Block towards west, Sahebganj Block towards East and Kotwa Block towards North. The town lies in the border of East Champaran and Muzzafarpur district.

Transport in Kesaria

Kesaria has good road and rail connectivity. There are frequent buses operating from here to all major nearby cities. Motihari Railway Station and Siwan Junction are two nearby railway station connecting Kesaria to other parts of Bihar. The Patna airport is the nearest airport from Kesaria.

History and Culture of Kesaria

During ancient time the city was known as Kessaputta. Here lies the remains of Kesariya Stupa. It is the place where Lord Buddha delivered his famous Kalama Sutta. Through the discourse, Buddha urged his followers to analyze his teaching thoroughly before accepting the same. Maithili is the local language spoken here along with Hindi and Urdu. As per the census of 2011, Kesaria has a population of 18,984 of which 10,072 are males and 8,912 are females. Of the total population, Hindus are about 87% and Muslims are close to 13%. The literacy rate of the city is 61.5% which is slightly lower than the state average of 61.8%. It is quite hot in summer season here with temperature climbing to 43 °C. The best time to visit here is in the months of October to March.

Tourism in Kesaria

Kesaria Stupa is one of the major attractions of the city. The stupa was discovered in 1958 during an excavation led by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). It dates between 200 AD and 750 AD. The local people call the stupa 'Devala' meaning "house of God". The stupa has been declared a protected monument of national importance by ASI.Today it serves as a holy site for Buddhist pilgrims around the world. The stupa has five large terraces each of which varies in shape and enshrines a life like statue of Lord Buddha. When seen from above, the stupa gives an impression of a Mandala.

Viraat Ramayan Mandir: It is an upcoming Hindu temple complex in Kesaria. The construction of the temple began in 2012 with an estimated budget of INR 500 crores and it is presumed to be the largest religious monument in the world once completed.
